Is Dizziness And Fatigue In The Legs A Matter Of Concern?

I am a healthy 82 year old male. Height 5 7. Weight 160. No health concerns until today. While standing and talking to my daughter, I felt dizzy with very weak legs I kneeled down on the lawn and immediately felt better. That was 6 hours ago and I have not had any recurring symptoms. Should I have concerns and if so what? Thank you

Hello and welcome,

It is highly likely you experienced syncopal episode from orthostatic hypotension. Mostly it is a benign condition and is common in older age. Syncope is caused by sudden drop of blood pressure. Posture is the main cause here: prolonged standing and sudden standing are the precipitating causes. The signs and symptoms range from mild to severe depending on the type of hypotension and the level of drop of blood pressure. It occurs when the brain and heart do not communicate with each other properly. For example, when you stand for a long time the blood pressure drops. But the body is not able to adjust blood pressure according to the body needs and it drops to that level that causes dizziness, weakness, blurry vision, confusion and feeling tired. These symptoms don’t last long and often goes away after sitting down for a while.
First of all get your blood pressure measured. If it is normal start life-style modifications:
-increase fluid intake rich in sodium and potassium,
-decrease alcohol if you drink,
-avoiding situations that trigger symptoms, such as standing up from seated position fast or standing for long periods.
-learn to recognize symptoms and take action to raise your blood pressure.
If the above life-style changes will not help, hypotension may be a sign of another medical condition. See you doctor for thorough health examination and tests. Please, note certain medications (diuretics, anti-hypertensives nitroglycerin) can also cause hypotention, the medication dose and interactions should be considered if the episodes persist.

I hope I have answered your question. Please, feel free to ask me more in HCM if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you,
Malik Amonov MD
