Is Donating Blood Within A Month Of Taking Hep B Shot Dangerous?
I had my hep. B shot recently. Tomorrow is the 18th day, since then, and I have a paper that says I might have to wait 28 days before donating blood. However, considering I m a woman, at that time of the month, wouldn t that eliminate some of the vaccination? I really want to donate blood. (The Red Cross gave me a sticker the last time I donated, saying I could donate next on the 7th, aka, last Monday.)
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. It would be better for you to wait for 28 days before donating blood as specified after receiving Hepatitis B shot. This is because of the immune reaction that is triggered by vaccine by a week after receiving the shot and would continue for about 3 weeks following that. Since HbsAg test is done as a screening test before blood transfusion, it would come positive and may not be able to differentiate as to weather it is due to vaccine related response or due to infection. Hence, to be on safer side, it is advised to donate blood after a month following intake of Hepatitis B shot. Also, you need to wait for a minimum of 3 months before you donate blood next time. Hope the information provided clarifies your doubt. All the best.
