Is Dosage Of 3 Months Of Augmetin Duo Twice A Day Correct For Ear Infection?

Hi, my daughter is 2 years old and from last january is having recurrent colds with hight fever and ear pain. Also the nose is blocked. I tried everything from nebulizer to nasal drops. I went to the GP several times in this period complaining about her condition. Theu gave her just paracetamol. Now I had an appointment to the ENT department and was told me by the doctor that she has fluid in the middle ear. They dont know what is causind, if is adenoid or ear infection. They prescribed 3 months of augmetin duo, twice a day. My concern is about the periodo she is taking without review of her condition, once she ask me do come back in three months. Is right treatment?

Hi,

Noted your history about your 2 year old daughter having recurrent colds with high fever and ear pain, treatment from GP, no relief, so consulted an ENT who according to you has prescribed Augmentin for three month.
First of all Augmentin is never prescribed for 3 months in any case in world hence this looks to be a gap of communication and you should get this cleared immediately; can be given for a week or 2 at the most.
The commonest cause in children is enlarged adenoids and thus also needs a local treatment like decongestants, anti-inflammatory and something to improve the immunity.
Give her proper treatment and she will be fine.
Also get the tests of blood, X-ray for adenoid and mastoids if required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
