Is Drinking Alcohol Safe While On Sovaldi?

My friend has been discussing w/her doctor about starting Solvadi (I think also w/ribovirion). Unfortunately she s been unable to completely stop drinking alcohol, altho she s been able to limit it to three 4 oz wine glasses per day. Is alcohol in any amount allowed while trying Solvadi? or does she have to refrain from all drinking in order to be approved for Solvadi? She s genotype 3 with NO cirrhosis. I m trying to understand what all the new HepC treatment studies are saying that I see online, so I can help her become a good candidate for whatever treatment she might be able to try. (Past/traditional attempts at quitting - AA, rehab, therapy - have not gone so well for her so far....)

Hi,

It is advisable not to drink whilst taking any medication, even medication prescribed over the counter. This is because drinking alcohol might affect the way the medication works, and mixing alcohol with medication can also be dangerous when mixed or taken with medication, and thus lead to very serious consequences. Sovaldi is an antiviral medication and mostly broken down (metabolized) in the liver.

Hepatitis C affects the liver and can lead to serious complication in the liver of not treated, and alcohol can lead to a lot of damage to the liver when used / taken inappropriately as well. My suggestion would be to:
i) Mention this to the doctor writing up the prescription
ii) Have a liver test before and a few months after commencing the medication
iii) Cut down alcohol use when taking medication, or stop taking alcohol if possible

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
