Is Edema Dangerous?

My legs, feet and ankles have been swelling alot and if i push in on my skin it leaves pits. My mother, father and sister and grandma all had edema, and this looks like it to me. I havent been to the dr yet and it is a holiday weekend so the drs offices are currently closed. It it safe to wait until Tuesday (its now sunday ) to go to the doctor or is edema dangerous enough to go to the Er. I dont want to go to the Er unless its for a good reason.
