Hi, i am 46 years old married and a working mom. I would like to ask you about my laboratory result which alarms me very much. My SGPT result is 76.4 and the normal value is only 5-35 U/L. Now my question is, is this really serious result? am i going to die? Thank you for your immediately reply.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
SGPT (ALT) is a specific liver enzyme which gets elevated in certain liver disorders.
Isolated elevation of SGPT might not have significance and is not a life threatening problem.
Your value is about 2 to 3 fold increase than normal. Hence the cause for it needs to be evaluated.
Kindly quit smoking and alcohol intake if you are habituated to. Also consume low fat diet as fatty liver could be one of the cause.
Kindly get an ultrasound abdomen scan done to know the status of liver and gall bladder.
Kindly consult Physician with the report for proper clinical evaluation and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
