Is Elevated Heart Rate And Vomiting Sensation Effect Of Codeine?

I took some hydromet for my cough. It has codeine in it and I didn t measure a tsp out I just took a sip. My heart rate is 96bpm and I feel like I m either going to vomit or pass out. Is that the effects of the codeine and me being exhausted after a long day, or do I need to be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from increased heart rate, feeling of passing away and vomiting sensation after taking codeine. Some patients do complain of increased heartbeat, blood pressure changes, syncope and arrhythmia after taking Codeine. Do not take codeine more than the required dosage. Other side effects may be tachycardia, breathlessness, flushing of face, facial swelling, pruritus, urticaria, etc.

Some people are sensitive to codeine, if so avoid taking it. You are suggested to take rest as stress and exhaustion can also cause such symptoms. Take adequate water, fluid, warm beverage to replenish your system. However, to stay on the safer side, you should get lipid function tests, stress test, blood sugar (fasting and PP), echo, ECG, etc., done. Get clinically examined by a cardiologist to detect any developing coronary artery disease, CAD. You will be treated accordingly. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
