Is Equally Divided Time Interval Important To Administer Antibiotic Eye Drops?
My 5 year old son has a prescription of Polymyxin B sulfate and trimethoprim for his eye. The prescription says 3 times a day. I placed a drop on his eye at 8pm, should I wake him up at 4am for his next dose? or waiting until he wakes up is just fine? maybe 7am. Then, he will go to school and will come back home after 3pm. Is an equally divided time interval important for this antibiotic? like every 8 hours or it doesn t matter? what about if it is used only twice per day? like 8pm and then 8am (before he goes to school) and then 8pm again before he goes to bed.
So far as the antibiotic drops are concerned, there is no precise time lines needed to be followed to wake up the child from deep sleep and manage the dose.
You can figure out the schedule as per his school timings, 2-3 hours out of the 8 hour criteria will not cause any alteration in outcome of the pathology.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel, General & Family Physician
