Hi, i do care for your concern.
barium meal study is done to know the gross anatomy of esophagus.
manometry study is done to asses the function of muscle and sphincter action, which is much of physiology (functioning)
hence manometry is much detailed study of esophagus.
Need not panic as before the procedure local anesthetic will be used so that you feel very little pain if at all so.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
