Is Excruciating Pain In The Chest Related To Heart?

I am an otherwise healthy 66yo female; have had no heart issues; have normal to low bp; am on no prescribed medications. Once last August and twice this month (Dec) I have experienced severe pain in the middle of my chest, pain which starts low and builds up to excruciating (definitely a 9 or 10) and then gradually subsides, the whole episode lasting 5 minutes or so. The first two instances occurred in the middle of the night and woke me up. The last instance was yesterday in church service. I had to leave the service and lie down. I was afraid I might pass out.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

chest pains are not always because of heart , however the way you explained the pain , i would advise, that though it may not be caridac , but cardiac causes must be ruled out. generally cardiac pain is sever, diffused, exacerbated by exertion and may radiates to the lift hand or jaw. The pain well be because of esophageal spasm, or stomach problem, or even pancreatic problem , but first of all cardiac causes should be ruled out , so i would advise you should see your doctor in this regards so to get ECG, echo or other test like stress tests to be sure that there is nothing wrong with the heart.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
