Is Fatigue And Slurred Speech After Alcoholism Sign Of Liver Damage?
Hi there. I've been going through a divorce the past couple weeks. When everything starting going downhill a few weeks back I took 6 Extra Strength Tylenol PM and drank an entire bottle of Champagne (it was all that was in the house) 4 or 5 days later I did the same thing but took closer to 10 Extra Strength Tylenol PM. I was in so much pain I just wanted to go to sleep and not wake up. Anyways, I'm an extremely healthy individual. I am 5ft 7in and 135lbs. I had some blood work done before all this happened and my liver was extremely healthy. I only drink socially (3 beers max) 2 or 3 times a month. Both times I took the pills and champagne I experienced extreme fatigue, difficulty talking and standing up. The fatigue and slurred speech lasted into the next day; I only had difficulty standing the night I took the pills. Aside from having slightly more sensitivity to cold, I'm currently feeling strong, I run frequently, eat a normal diet; I'm more or less feeling myself again. I'm wondering if I should get some more lab work done to see if I've seriously harmed my liver. What would you say is the likelihood that I damaged my liver, and do you think it will recover from this? Thank you.
There is a chance you've damaged your liver, but seeing that you're feeling better, it's unlikely that you've caused any acute liver failure, in which case you'd still be feeling sick and not feeling better. Long term damage is called cirrhosis, and you may have caused some cirrhotic changes to your liver. You could have put yourself into acute liver failure - which could have cost you your life. It seems like this did not happen, and you're fortunate. I'd have your liver enzymes checked, and get a liver ultrasound to see how health your liver is. I think overall, you'll likely be ok, but you can get a baseline to see how healthy (or unhealthy) your liver is.
I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions.
