Is Feeling Of Tightened Abdominal Muscles Normal In An Overweight Person?
I am overweight, 76 year old, large belly. I have a sensation (pain ?) in my abdomen that feels like my belly muscles are tensing up. It is OK as long as I sit, but when I stand up, it is so tight that I have to bend over slightly. I feels like my transending, assending, colon is tightening up. Is this normal for an overweight person?
Abdominal (belly) muscles are not designed for lifting weight. When your abdominal fat content increases then it can exert traction on your abdominal muscles which may become tense so as to compensate this traction. This is evident when you stand and especially in moderate to severe obesity and it is not normal as the muscles are strained to develop compensatory hypertrophy. You may require surgical intervention if needed.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
