Is Flying Safe With An Ankle Fracture?

I have fractured ankle. Was in a cast for 3 weeks. Did not have surgery. I am able to walk with no pain on the ankle. It s just bruised and a little swollen around the foot. My foot felt better when the cast was taken off. I have a below the knee boot cast. It s not an air cast. It is uncomfortable because it rubs my outer leg. I feel better with nothing being on the foot. There is no pain and I m able to walk freely. Do I still have to wear the boot? Also, I m flying home in a month. Will I be able to fly? I m concerned about blood clots.

Hi, I'm dr.Anto

Thank you for submitting your question.

If you are flying with a closed fracture or even open fracture it can lead to compartment syndrome.

You are out from a cast, and only below the knee boot cast which has some space. You are fine.

If you are good by walking without the boot cast then you don't have to wear it.

It won't get you into blood clots.

Thank you.
