(Hi, I'm 31 years old) I quit smoking almost 4 weeks ago and I feel worse then before. I've been having nighmares 4-5 times a week about ppl dying around me. I sleep betwwen 6-9 hours a night and I'm never refreshed and always tired almost exausted. I can't concentrate and have difficulty making sense at times. I've been light headed as well. I suffered a burnout when I was 17 years ols and my Dr. said that I might be on my way to a deppression right now....

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM

You have recently quit smoking and have symptoms like getting bad nightmares, poor non refreshing sleep, tiredness, poor concentration, difficulty in making judgements, light headedness etc. Such symptoms could occur in depression but as you quit smoking 4 weeks back so more likely nicotine withdrawal appears to be reason behind your symptoms. Long term withdrawal or protracted withdrawal may present and persist for prolonged periods of time.

As these symptoms are causing distress to you so I would advise you to consult a psychiatrist for help. Medicines like bupropion can help to reduce your anxiety and craving of smoking and you will feel better. Nicotine gums can be used in severe anxiety, withdrawal symptoms. Visit a psychiatrist for prescription of drugs.

Thanks, hope this helps you. Take care
