Is Hallucination And Delirium A Side Effect Of Tylenol With Codeine?

My 86-year old mother was treated in an urgent care center for severe back pain. She takes Namenda, Selexa? and Aricept. She was given tylenol #3 with codeine. 4 days later she began hallucinating and suffering from delirium and had to be hospitalized. Should the doctor have been aware of the effects this medicine could have on her?

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. She is 86 years old and is already taking Nemenda, Celexa and Aricept. Nemenda is used in dementia. So her age, history of dementia and also use of antipsychotic drug all are potentiating factors for delirium. In delirium loss of orientation to time, place and person is seen along with cloudiness of consciousness. Get her examined for confirmed diagnosis of delirium. Use of high doses of Tylenol with Codeine can precipitate the delirium because she have other aggravating factors also. Please talk to her doctor and ask for proper evaluation and treatment. Medicines like Haloperidol with Phenargan can help to reduce her psychotic symptoms and she would come out of delirium. Her serum electrolytes should be maintained along with maintenance of vitals. Consult her doctor for treatment.

Thanks, I hope this helps you. Take care
