Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am currently being treated for a very large (3cm by 4cm staghorn) kidney stone in my left kidney there are also several more in that kidney one is 9mm. Ten days ago I underwent my first treatment where they put a stent in between my kidney and my bladder. At that time they used the laser to break up a lot of the large stone and used a basket to remove an 8mm stone from my right side. Needless to say, I was pretty uncomfortable for several days. Things have mellowed out and I currently am only experiencing pain when I urinate. My question is this, so, I feel bit better and all and I was wondering if it is okay, or advisable, to have sex with that stent in
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. A stent is a plastic tube with holes throughout it used to temporarily help urine drain from the kidney down to the bladder. After ureteroscopy, the ureter will be inflamed and swollen. Sometimes the ureteral swelling will close off the ureter and block the flow of urine causing pain. The stent keeps the ureter open and the urine flowing until the inflammation and swelling resolves. Increased physical activity will lead to increased stent discomfort. It is advisable to wait for at least 2 weeks after stent removal before having intercourse. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
