Is Headaches Common After Not Urinating For Hours?

Is it common to get headaches when you have to go a few hours without urinating? This has been an ongoing problem for years. If I am busy, drinking a lot of tea, etc, and haven't stopped to urinate in 3 or 4 hours, I will get a headache. As soon as I do urinate, though, the headache begins to lessen. Sometimes it will even go away completely if I urinate as soon as I began to feel it.

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. Urine holding will not cause headache until bladder is too much distended. In such case, bladder street sensation can result into "visceral type of pain".

Visceral pain can cause some unrelated symptoms due to stimulation of vagus nerve/parasympathetic system and release of painkiller substances. These symptoms can be

- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Sweating in palms and soles
- Palpitation
- Dizziness

In your case, if we want to relate then this is most probable explanation. Another explanation is "stress headache". This type of headache is related to mental or physical stress. As you feel stressed due to holding of urine, you start feeling headache. And as soon as the stress factor is gone, you get relief.

There is nothing to worry. But holding urine is bad for health. It can cause

- urinary infection
- Bladder stone
- Kidney damage
- bladder pressure changes
My advise is try to pass urine as early as possible.

Hope it will clear your doubts. If still in doubts, do let me know.
Thanks, Take care
