Is Heavy Bleeding With Painful Cramps Normal After Removing Mirena?

Hi, I had my Mirena removed on Monday after having it for 2 1/2 years. During the time I had it in I did not get a period at all. My doctor said that it would take 4-6 weeks to get my period back. Today I started bleeding and it is very heavy with very painful cramps. Is this normal?
