Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Heavy Breathing In A Very Overweight Person A Cause For Concern?
my husband is approximately 50 lbs overweight and smokes occasionally....though lately, I ve caught him more frequently. He does have HBP, but what really is concerning me lately is that he breaths loudly. Sometimes it seems like maybe, allergies...like a nose thing. He denies that and gets annoyed when I say that I can hear him breath. Unfortunately, he is a surgeon, and doesn t like to hear this from anyone!!! He is also very short, so I m concerned that his belly is pushing on his lungs????? He complains of having a bad knee when it is obvious that it is hard to sit on a low seat, get on the floor or get into a tub.???????
Thanks for asking at Healthcare Magic. I read your question and I understand your concern. Obstructive sleep apnea(Hypoventilation syndrome)Hypothyroidism, Polycythemia. However with loud breaths, overweight; pain in knee increases the probability of Obstructive sleep apnea Hypoventilation syndrome especially if BMI is greater than and short stature. All that you have to do is to do his Polysomnography test to differentiate from the above conditions, TSH level, Complete blood count, ABGs, Chest Xray. lose weight by adopting modified atkin diet that is low carb high protein diet. Do regular aerobic excessive. Hope it helps best. Take your best care. Regards Dr Ejaz
