Hi, I am 51 years old have had a clean bill of health. The last six months I have had vaginal bleeding heavy at times and bright red. Other times brown. no pain , no headaches. Just inconvenient. Should I be concerned or is this part of Menopause. Thank You . YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on history you seem to be suffering from perimenopausal uterine bleeding. Its common causes at menopause include hormonal imbalance (low estrogen causing thinning of the endometrium and its shedding), uterine polyps, or cancers of the uterus.

I advise you to consult a gynecologist for further evaluation and certain lab tests such as transvaginal ultrasound, endometrial biopsy, hysteroscopy and D&C (dilation and curettage) to find out the actual cause (if any) responsible for prolonged vaginal bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
