Dear Madam, Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.
Ferritin is an acute phase reactant which means when the body experiences inflammation, ferritin levels will go up. It also reflects the amount of stored iron in the body.
The normal levels of blood ferritin for men are 24 to 336 micrograms per liter.
Elevated levels of Ferritin therefore are usually due to causes such as acute or chronic inflammation, chronic alcohol consumption,
liver disease,
renal failure, obesity,
metabolic syndrome,
hyperthyroidism, or malignancy.
It is also elevated in
hemochromatosis, which occurs when your body absorbs too much iron resulting in deposition of excess of iron in various organs of the body (hemochromatosis).
Consult a physician for proper assessment and for certain tests like CBC,
ESR, thyroid function test, liver and
kidney function tests, serological tests for
hepatitis,
C Reactive protein,
Rh factor, as they can provide more insight into the iron levels in your body.
He should take the iron chelating agents like Defiperone or Desferoximine to reduce the high levels of ferritin according to his doctor's advice. and repeat ferritin level after a month.
Hope the advice given above would be useful in identifying the cause of high ferritin level and its treatment.
