Is Hirsutism Indicative Of PCOS?

Does hirsutism mean I definitely have PCOS and therefore not have any children? I am 21 and have had regular 28-30 day cycle periods for the last 6/7 years never missing a single one. Help! Plus is there anything that actually helps hirsutism as I am really bad on my body. I have had laser which worked for a little while but hairs are now back. Thank you

Hi,

You have male pattern hair growth and you have regular menstrual cycle with 28 to 30 days period. Your doubt of having Polycystic ovarian syndrome? Hirsutism is condition due to hormonal imbalance due to excess androgen in female causing abnormal male like hair growth particularly over face, chest, abdomen and back. Causes for excess hormone may be exogenic that is by supplementing excess cortisol or prednisolone which increases the androgen secretion in adrenals. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia produces more cortisone and androgen is a condition affection the adrenal glands present over the kidney.

Cushing's syndrome is another condition which secretes more androgen including cortisol. Androgen secreting tumors of the adrenals or ovaries also secrete more androgen and develop excess hair growth. Obesity is another condition causing polycystic ovarian syndrome which also causes hormonal imbalance causing androgen production which results in hirsutism. Drugs such as minoxidil will induce androgen production causing hirsutism.

CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis or ultrasound helps very much in identification of the abnormality. Management depends on the cause. If there is no pathological androgen secretion, no active intervention is needed. Obesity should be corrected with appropriate diet. Other conditions such as Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Cushing's syndrome, androgen secreting tumor needs medical or surgical intervention.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
