Is Hormone Therapy Advisable Prior To A Hysterectomy?

If a patient has already been diagnosed with non atypical endometriosis and is scheduled for a full hysterectomy, June of this year. Is hormone therapy necessary? My mother was prescribed a 6 month pill regiment of 160mg per day of the synthetic hormone Megestrol Acetate or Megace. My mother already suffers from, high blood pressure, stage one dietbetis, acid reflux, and obesity. The hysterectomy is a GO!, is it really necessary for her to take progestin? When its proven to cause an increased risk in breast cancer, hypertension, and slew of other diseases she s already disposed to.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Hormone therapy is not indicated prior to hysterectomy. If she has severe symptoms like hot flushes and depression, then hormone replacement may have some role, otherwise it is not recommended.

Thanks.
