Is Induced Coma Recommended When Treating Chronic Pneumonia?

my mom is in the icu due to chronic pneumonia. the doctor said her left lung is "whited out". she's a smoker. right now she's in a drugged induced coma, and she's hooked up to a breathing machine. i've been researching severe pneumonia. what are her chances of making it?
