Is Intermittent Pain In The Ears A Cause Of Concern?

Hi, My son Carter has been complaining off and on about an ear ache. Last week he had cold like symptoms but no fever. Can an ear infection sometimes cause pain and then go away for a while before coming back? He complains of a fullness in his ear since having the cold last week. Should I bring him in to a doc to be checked out?

Hi.
Thanks for he query..

Pain in ear and clogged feeling can be probably due to infection in ear.

Clogged sensation after a bout of cold can be due to fluid accumulation behind the eardrum that can happen after a cold..

Yes, you should get him checked either by an Emergency room doctor or an ENT Physician.

If there is infection in ear he can be advised a course of antibiotics orally as well as ear drops along with painkillers to relieve pain..

Saline nasal drops and other decongestant nasal drops according to his age can be given to relieve clogging of ear.

Avoid cleaning or picking the ear at home as it can cause damage to eardrum..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
