Is Iron Transfusion Advisable During Pregnancy?

Hi Doctor, My wife is 34 weeks pregnant and he is low in Iron (7) and haemoglobin (103), our midwife asked us to do an Iron transfusion and we are a bit hesitant as the iron supplement that she gave us during early pregnancy made my wife sick and vomit always and we had to stop it eventually. Now when we googled and found that same kind of symptoms as side effects when we do an Iron transfusion not sure what to do Can some one help please?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
With this hemoglobin and iron levels, she must go fo iron injections. Anemia can have adverse effects for both the mother as well as the baby. If not corrected, she may need blood transfusion before or during the delivery of the baby. Iron tablets cause stomach irritation and some patients can have vomiting or diarrhea but iron injections will not cause vomiting as it will be given in a vein, and not orally. There is no other option at this stage of pregnancy other than iron injections and it is quite safe.
Thank you
