Is Irregular Menstrual Periods A Cause For Concern?

Hi! I am 40yrs old and lately I have been having issues with my menstrual period. A few months ago it started getting lighter but lasting a bit longer. Then this month it started at the beginning of the month, lasted about 7 days or so, went away for like 2-3 days & started again, this time it has been over a week & as the days go by it seems like it s getting heavier. What does this mean? Should I be worried?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Any irregular bleeding, especially in women 35 years and older, needs to be checked.

I would advise you to have a check with your doctor and thus have a vaginal exam, a Pap smear (if you have not had one in the last 3 years) and possibly a transvaginal ultrasound.

According to the results of these tests, the doctor will decide on the possible diagnosis and necessary treatment.

I hope this answers your query and is helpful to you. Let me know if I may assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
