Is It Advisable To Switch From Xanax To Ativan?

Yes , I was on 1 mg Xanax for anxiety and my Dr just decided to change it to Ativan and my anxiety is unreal And I was the Xanax for over 20 yrs and it worked . I have never been red flagged or ask for refills early so I am having a real hard time right now . He says the reason he is taking his patience off Xanax is because someone who retired a Dr was giving them and pain pills to a lot of his patience so they were told to get people off of Xanax and pain pills Which I don t believe .......

Xanax and Ativan contain alprazolam and lorazepam respectively. Basically both have similar mechanism of action and similar side effect profile as both belong to same class of medicines i.e. benzodiazepine. Only difference is that Ativan (lorazepam) is shorter-acting as compared to Xanax (alprazolam). If you think that Xanax worked better for you than Ativan then you can again shift to Xanax. But both are habit forming drugs and they are not recommended for long term use.
Advice
1.     You can continue with Xanax at bed time
2.     Avoid driving and swimming as it causes sedation
3.     Workout in gym at least ½ hour in a day for 5 days in a week
4.     Appreciate your special qualities
5.     Take yourself positively
6.     Stop worrying
7.     Schedule enjoyable events and activities
8.     Play with children and talk with elderly
9.     Practice meditation
10.     Discuss your problem with your family
11.     Consult a psychiatrist for further counseling and follow up
I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question
