Is It Necessary To Go To The ER After Masturbating 14 Days Post-cerclage, As I’m Concerned About Potential Complications?

After I found out I was pregnant, I had sexual intercourse. Any time I masturbated I use to get slight cramps after. Went in for a 16 weeks check up and my cervix was damaged and a cerclage had to be placed. It had been 14 days since the cerclage was placed and my hormones got the best of me and I masturbated and there were no cramps. Reading up on it after the fact I realized this was a bad idea and it won t be done again. But should I go the the ER as I m really scared after reading?

Hi,

Normally, we advise to abstain from vaginal sex for about one week before and 1-2 weeks after the procedure of cerclage during pregnancy, which also includes masturbation. Now, as a period of 14 days has already passed after the procedure, hence, vaginal sex may be safe. However, vigorous sex and/or rough act of masturbation should be avoided, lest there may be any damage to the sutures or fragile cervical tissue.

Still, if you are not having any specific complaint, you are not required to go to the ER. If you have one or more of the following complaints, it is an indication to go to ER:
- Any fever above 100 degree F
- Any vaginal bleeding
- Strong abdominal cramps
- Excessive watery flow per vagina indicating membrane ruptures

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
