General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

17 mm hernia of stomach region of abdomen is not an absolute indication of surgery. The following are the indications for surgery of mesh repair of hernia:
- Severe, recurrent pain
- Chronic annoying discomfort
- Disturbances with day to day work via hernia
- Vomiting associated with abdomen pain
- Irreducible (hernia does not get relieved from its contents even after resting or sleeping)
- Intestine obstruction
- Patient or relatives choice in asymptomatic patient

As grandmother is aged with cardiac problem, surgery for her would be additional risk taking than normal person. Following measures will help you to delay or post pone surgery for a period of long time such as:
- Control her body weight
- Dietary care to avoid all dairy fat, spices, non-veg, junk foods which increase her tummy fat
- Have regular bowel movements with bulk forming laxative as Bran and green leafy veg
- Avoid weight lifting

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
