Is It Necessary To Remove The Plates From The Left Arm?

My father was operated upon twice on his left arm after a major accident. Theirs almost a 6 inch plate in his upper arm. he's 58 years of age and little diabetic. Now the bones are joined and his hand is OK. Is it necessary to remove the plates. If no then would their be any complications in the future.
