Is It Normal If Spitting Blood After A Significant Car Accident?

My boyfriend was in a significant car accident 6 days ago, and was hospitalized for 3 days. He suffered a concussion, along with other minor injuries, his eye was filled with blood. He has had the headaches, dizziness and trouble concentrating, which I believe is fairly common. However, he has been spitting up significant amounts of blood since then, and still is. He thinks it s normal and is not concerned. Having 3 active sons, and the injuries that go with them, I m thinking this is not normal and I am concerned.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

I am sorry for the significant car accident your boyfriend was in.

Spitting blood after such accident is a sign that his lungs or other thoracic organs are suffering.

Therefore, it is a must to consult a physician and soon as possible to run further tests to rule out severe lung or heart complications:
- chest X-ray
- cardiac echo
- ENT examination

Once the source of bleeding is localized, specific management guidelines will be prescribed.

All the best!
