Is It Normal To Be Tired On Stopping Synthyroid?

Yes please. I am awaiting app. at the Nuclear deptof the hospital in Bathurst N.B. I have had surgery for Thyroid Cancer a few years ago and must have a body scan etc. received a letter that my app is February. 2nd and Feb 4th. In preparation I have to go on a diet of no salt, no fish or sea food, and no dairy products, For four weeks, plus stop my synthroid medication for six weeks. I,m concerned about the latter as I am feeling tired and do not have my usual energy, is this okay? Is it normal?

Hello and thank you for using HCM!
I read carefully the situation prescribed by you and i will try to give you some more informations.
After total thyroidectomy it is mandatory to take thyroid hormones during the whole life. The interruption of the treatment for 6 weeks will have for sure symptoms like; fatigue, feeling sleepy, weight gain, constipation, ect. wich will be corrected soon after restarting the treatment.
There are also other ways to raise TSH for the whole body scintiscan without interrupting the treatment for 6 weeks.
1) To stop the treatment with levothyroxine and start T3 wich may be interrupted only 2 weeks before scintiscan.
2) 3 days before scintiscan you may apply 2 injections of recombinant TRH, for 2 consecutive nights.

Hope to have helped you with my information.
Best regards,
Dr.M.Guni
