Is It Normal To Have Swelling And Bruising After A Tetanus Shot?
I scraped my shin on a border around a flower garden. I actually fell into it and it was painful. It was pretty intense and really didn t bleed much. I was able to walk fine and didn t have much pain, even the next day. Day two I had to fly home and my flight was 4 hours. I was able to stretch out my leg. Today I went back to work and was standing quite a bit and noticed all this blood pooling around my ankle. Very swollen and black and blue. My foot was hurting a bit on the arch. My leg is bruised a bit on the leg around the scrape. I have had a tetanus shot recently. Is this normal to see this kind of swelling and bruising? Should I be concerned about clotting?
The bruised leg does not mean necessarily that it is infected. It might be due to bleeding when you fell. The blood is accumulated and now it appears as bruising (swelling).
If you are at the day 2 after falling, I advise to apply cold compresses to the swollen area for the next couple of days. After that, you can apply heparin cream to dissolve the clots and to make the bruising clear.
I also advise not to move for the next couple of days to avoid further injuries.
If the swelling will persist or increase the size, should see a doctor as soon as possible.
Hope it helped! Dr.Albana
