Hello, A member of my family got mitral valve replaced with metalic bileaflet carbomedics. She is on warfarine. Is it possible for her to have child. It is clear that shee needs observation throughout pregnancy with heparin and warfarine. but how much will be risk benefit percentage... thanks
Thank you for the question and thank you for visiting our site.
This is a complicated question. First, warfarin is completely contraindicated in pregnancy because it crosses the placenta and can harm the fetus. All women who are anti-coagulated during pregnancy are placed on heparin-like medications because they do not cross the placenta. Second, the greater concern is whether or not her heart would tolerate the changes that occur during pregnancy related to an increased strain on the heart. She ABSOLUTELY needs to schedule a visit with a high-risk OB/GYN, called a Perinatologist. Her OB/GYN can help to make this referral.
I hope that this helps and good luck!
