Is It Recommended To Take Sulfamethoxazole, Trimethoprim For Urine Tract Infection During Pregnancy?
Hi doctors, I'm pregnant with 15 weeks and my OB doctor prescribed me antibiotics due to my urine tract infection. He prescribed me antibiotics contents "Sulfamethoxazole" & "trimethoprim", seems this medicine is classified in D drug, but my OB doctor told me that after urine test found that I have drug resistance to other antibiotics, so he could only prescribe me this drug. His comment was I'm in 2nd trimester, and should be ok to take this medicine. But manufacturer of this medicine doesn't recommend to be taken by pregnant women. Doctores! Please help and give me some advices. very worried about this..Thank you.
Hello THanks for writing to us with your health concern. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim is pregnancy Category C. The risks outweigh the benefits. It is indeed rare to have a urine culture report that shows ONLY susceptibility to this drug and resistance to all others ! Please upload the reports to me at http://doctor.healthcaremagic.com/doctors/dr-aarti-abraham/64623 That way, I can guide you better. I might be able to suggest alternative medications for you. Do not take the drugs in the second trimester without a second opinion. Take regular folic acid supplements. Without knowing your reports, it is impossible to say if your doctor has made the right choice for you. All the best Take care.
