Is It Safe To Consume Alcohol Prior To Tonsillectomy?

I have just started university and there is quite a big pressurised drinking culture. I am looking to get out of it! I am having tonsillectomy in 6 weeks. Is it reasonable that I tell my peer group that I have been told to stop alcohol consumption prior to surgery?

hello,
This is absolutely a good idea. Anything you can do to reduce irritants to the throat will reduce inflammation. Alcohol can can have a burning effect on tissue. Also, keep in mind many medications recommend that you not consume alcohol while taking medication. The effectiveness of your medication can be altered. You may be taking medication to help control inflammation and an antibiotic to control infection. Reduce any stresses to your system. Keep well hydrated. Alcohol consumption acts as a diuretic and can cause dehydration. Maintain a proper diet with balanced vitamins and plenty of vitamin B12. This will help your recovery.
Thank you for your inquiry. I hope you find this information helpful and good luck on your surgery.
