Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is It Safe To Decrease The Dosage Of Lamictal For Seizures?
My son is physically and mentally impaired and has seizures. I just noticed that when I loaded his pill box for the week, I put in less lamictal than he should be receiving. He normally gets 150 mg 3 times per day and I have only been giving him 125 mg since Thursday. He hasn t had any seizures and actually seems calmer. I know that you have to be careful increasing/decreasing lamictal b/c of the rash. What should I do now?
It is not essentially necessary, that the patient should get seizures, immediately after reducing the dose of anti-seizure drugs. The level of drug already built up in blood, may have its effect to prevent the seizures for some time, even with reduced dosage. However, this is never advised to increase / decrease the dose of anti-seizure drugs, of your own, rather it should be strictly under guidance of your doctor to maintain the desired blood level of the drug.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
