Is It Safe To Drink Alcohol When Taking Metformin?

I am a male age 57 otherwise healthy and weigh 160 my doctor has suggested I take metformin for a elevated a1c of 7.2. I am also a social drinker, drinking two or three drinks per day. Is that too high for metfromin. I really enjoy drinking but never let it get out of hand. Thanks so much
