Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a heavy wine drinker and was prescribed Bupropion today with no advice from doctor. I've read that I should NOT stop drinking and start taking this medication and should NOT drink while on the medication??? Confused? when should I begin taking?
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Bupropion is an antidepressant drug and it causes little sedation. The drug is relatively safer drug but it can cause increased risk of seizures or some times hallucinations in individuals taking it. It is not advisable to take alcohol while on bupropion. Taking alcohol along with bupropion results in severe CNS or brain depression and this can cause sedation, sleepiness, abnormal behaviour or some times serious confusion or coma. So please dont drink while on this drug. Stopping alcohol abruptly may also cause severe withdrawal symptoms. In such confusing situation I'd advise you to call your doctor and take proper opinion.
