Is It Safe To Fly When Diagnosed With A Fractured Cheek Bone?

Hi, 7 days ago I was assaulted and knocked unconscious resulting in me having a orbital blow out and a fractured cheek bone, I am due to fly tomorrow on a 4 hour flight, I still have a very dark black eye, I have been adviced by a consultant not to fly, should I listen to her or is she telling me worst case cenario advice? Thanks Stuart

Hello Stuart,

I can understand your concern. I agree with your consultant that you should not fly with having a fractured cheek bone and orbital blow out.

The reason is the pressure imbalance that happens while flying in air. When the plane ascends and descends, the atmospheric pressure and the pressure of air in sinuses in the body are balanced as they are balanced when we are on the ground. This makes the injured sites very painful and the pressure may cause bleeding in the orbital area.

Thus, I advise you not to fly tomorrow and until your injury is healed. I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
