Is It Safe To Give Keppra For Mild Seizure In Children?

Hello,My daughter has just stared taking keppra. She is only on 500mg a day as she has very mild seizure symptoms and the medication is making he r very drowsy. I have always given her vitamins. She is taken a B complex, C, fish oil and sometime vitamin D. She had the flu shot a couple of weeks ago and has come down with the worst flu she has had.Her skin has also broken out, though it had done so before her diagnosis and she is overly stressed due to YEAR 12 HSC.Am I giving her the correct supplements?Thank you

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Keppra is Levatiracetam and the drug has been approved for use in children in partial seizures. The drug is a safe drug and is free of severe side effects. Mild sedation, nausea, dizziness, sleepiness etc are common side effects seen at the dose she is taking. She is also on B-complex, Vitamin C, Fish oil and occasional Vitamin D and in my opinion these are right supplements and there is no risk in giving her these supplements. But as per my opinion she should be given doses of Folic Acid daily and even if all other supplements are stopped still Folic acid tabs will do good. It is advisable to prescribed Folic Acid tabs along with any anti-seizure drug especially in children and pregnant ladies.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care.
