Is It Safe To Give Zoloft And Lamictal For Anxiety And OCD In Children?

The psychiatrist wants to put my 9 year old granddaughter on either Zoloft or Lamictal. She has been experiencing some severe OVD behavior & also anxiety. She has been seeing a counselor for the past couple months & the counselor feels she really needs to get on medication. Which drug would be better & which one has the fewest side effects in children?

Hello,

Yes, medicines are prescribed even for kids with OCD with severe anxiety. Tab. Zoloft is better than tab. Lamictal. Zoloft has higher efficacy in relation to OCD and is tolerated better. Cognitive behavioral therapy must continue even while using medication.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
