Is It Safe To Handle Paraformaldehyde In Case Of Pregnancy?

hello. I know that paraformaldehyde is contra indicated in case of pregnant women. I dont work directly with it as the technical assistant does the fixation and washing steps for me, the question is, is it safe for me and my baby basically to handle the tissue afterwards, lets say for microtome sectioning or similar. We are speaking of a vesicle of a max length of 500 µm. Thanks!

Hello ma'am and welcome.

There are teratogenic effects of paraformaldehyde which is why it is contraindicated, and the amount mentioned by you is indeed very minute, but over time the exposure can increase and this would be good. If it were a one time thing, then this would be safe and not really risky.

I hope you understand.

Best wishes.
