Is It Safe To Have Surgery To Remove Artificial Veins From Upper Arms?

Hi, my ex husband just had fem pop bypass in Dec. last, now the artificial viens have colapsed and they want to take viens from upper arms to use in yet another surgery. He will lose his legs if this fails again, but will he also compromise his arms if he allows them to take viens for grafts from them??? Should he just have the legs taken off or let them now go into his arms, he will need his arms if this next surgery fails and they have to take his legs...very concerned....he s been through so many surgeries already....thank you.

Hi,

With the information you provided, I can inform you that veins from upper arms used in bypass surgeries are superficial and only responsible for 25-30% of the venous blood flow. Deep venous system of the upper arm in a healthy person can handle the blood flow itself in a healthy individual. Doctors will surely check deep veins first and only extract superficials if they don’t find any problems with them.

Of course the procedure has its own risks like infection. These are my personal opinions and will not represent an actual examination. I can inform you better about vessel diseases if you provide additional information like does he have diabetes or when did his illness start, which symptoms does he experience.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
