General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Plavix contains clopidogrel as well as Brilinta contains ticagrelor, both of which belong to the group of medications known as blood thinners are used to treat and prevent cardiovascular diseases like heart attack, peripheral vascular diseases and ischemic strokes. When switching from Plavix to Brilinta, using a loading dose of 180 mg of Brilinta is recommended, respectively in the early stage of treatment, when acute treatment is needed.

The loading dose can be taken regardless of when the last dose of Plavix was taken and should be followed by maintenance doses that may be 90 mg twice daily for Brilinta. After the early stage of treatment, it could be reasonable to escalate therapy with a maintenance dose of 90 mg twice daily for Brilinta, respectively without use of a loading dose. So, it will be safe to switch from Plavix to Brilinta if it is done under the supervision and guidance of your prescribing doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
