Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal, MD.
Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query
The fact remains that being a diabetic, you are prone to infections. This is more so if the sugar levels that you have are not well controlled on the medicines you are on. From the query, I am not aware about either the medicine taken or the sugar control.
One should also know that
diabetes affects all parts of the body including the
kidney. A sub clinical kidney damage is common in diabetics that manifests as a disease at a later date. Some medicines meant for diabetes can also damage the kidneys, but are prescribed because the benefits are far greater then the risk.
As for
Amikacin. Yes it potentially damages the kidney, and I would avoid the antibiotic is any of my patient if a suitable alternative is available. You have a culture report (results not entirely mentioned in the query) which also tells the antibiotics the organism is sensitive too. If an oral and better medicine is available, I would usually prefer that.
Also have plenty of fluids while on amikacin and watch your kidney functions. testing KFT every 3-4 days will be a good idea.
I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above/if any other so I can be of help further.
I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.
Please do understand that some details could be extracted from a detailed history and examination.
Please feel free to ask another query. I would be glad to help you. Looking forward to your return query with the details asked so that I can help you further.
