Is It Safe To Take Colchicine And Probenecid Together?

My husband has gout. Why are colchicine & probenecid prescribed together? They both seem to have the side effects he is now having - diarrhea, stomach pain, back ache, nausea, etc. He has now been on it about 2 weeks & will be going back to doctor Monday.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Patient,

1.)an alternative to colchicine (antiinflammatory) if not well taken is either naproxen or cortisone or a combination of both.

2.) An alternative to probenecid (uric acid reducer) is allopurinol.

So your md has options to switch the medications if your husband is suffering too many sideffects from the substances you have been perscribed.

Hope this is helping you , if you have any clarificatons you can get back to me, if this was helpful please kindly rate my answer. Best regards
