Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. He is 90 years old and have dementia. Depakote is a mood stabiliser drug and the drug is also an anti seizure drug. The drug would help to reduce his mood swings and will control his anger and irritation. The drug is safe drug and can be given without any fear to him. The drug is a good choice for control of his mood symptoms. Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine drug and the drug can worsen the symptoms of his dementia. So as he is suffering from dementia, in my opinion Lorazepam is not a good choice of drug.

Please talk to his psychiatrist again and discuss about the drug.

Thanks, I hope this helps you. Take care.
