Is It Safe To Take Depakote For Depression?

Iam the mother of a 26 year old son. he has a history of epilepsy. Meds; kepra and carbitrol . first seizure age 8.grand mal . on meds for a year and when the dr. at st Christophers hosp. in phila weaned him off he had a grand mal seizure. been on meds ever since. over the years has had weird seizure like activity called absence seizure. changed drs, over the years some say they are not seizure but obsessive compulsive activity. the poor guys turns his head stare then turns it the other way stares and looks at his hands on occasions. it is uncontroable............. he is depressed. he has been losing excessive weight. this happened he senior year of high school . his neurologist ordered video tapped eeg at home to see if it was seizure activity or obsessive compulsive activity. at that time he did see seizure activity and changed his meds I think he took carbitrol away and started him on Depakote. He came back to us but after a couple years it started again and we changed meds again. I think Depakote can help with depression or at least I think so. He also most looks anorexic. because of the weight loss I took him to a gi specialist He had an upper gi and lower GI. the results were neg for gluten allergy, neg for cancer, and the Dr did not think he had colitis. My son does have occas diarrhea but eats well. I notice he swallows very slowly and he seams to swallow weird like it has get the food over a hump. just weird. I also had him checked by a natural Dr. who check for lymes dieses and he treated him just in case on oral antibiotic. In the past blood labs his platelet count was low so we were told to take him to a hemotolgyst by the GI guy. he followed him and his platelet count came back up. His current neurologist told me to take him to a psychrist because the last eeg did not show seizure activity. I will do that but I hate to have him on more meds. He looks like he is dying before my eyes. I am going to take him for a physical again and I guess a phychrist right after that. Can there be a possible problem with endocrine system. He also had a cat of the brain2 years ago or less and that was negative. I live in Montgomery township pa. I am a nurse at fox chase cancer canter. I want my son to get better and feel normal again. I feel like he is a medical mystery.
